Logistics
Time: Saturday January 27, 9-3:30 Place: Evans 330
Note: Evans is accessed by keycard on the weekends. If you don’t have keycard access, email Chris and we’ll arrange a time for you to be let in.
1 Preparation
1.1 Required
- If you’d like to use Python, install either the
sqlite3orduckdbpackages on your laptop. - If you’d like to use R, install the
RSQLiteandduckdbpackages on your laptop. - Download this DuckDB database file, this alternative DuckDB database file and this SQLite database file onto your laptop.
Alternatively, if you have an SCF account you can plan to use one of the SCF machines via ssh or the SCF Jupyterhub.

2 (Approximate) Schedule
- 9 am - 10 am: (Session 1; optional) review/introduction to databases, database schema and normalization, and very basic SQL syntax
- 10 am - noon: (Session 2) grouping (group by), joins, set operations, subqueries, pratice problems
- noon - 1 pm: lunch (pizza provided by the department)
- 1 pm - 2:30 pm: (Session 3) window functions, practice problems
- 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm: (Session 4) (tentative, subject to participant interest) database administration demo or data lake/big data/Arrow demo
3 Material
The tabs at the top will guide us through the material to be covered in the workshop. We’ll be accessing the background material in the SCF Databases tutorial, interspersed with time to work on SQL practice problems.
